Differences Between a Family Room and a Living Room

Your home is your castle, each and every room is important, and each and every room serves a distinct purpose. We have all heard of both a family room and a living room, and we want to help you find out what the difference is. So, what is the difference?

What Is a Living Room?

A living room is more often than not the formal area where families might entertain guests or host visitors or important events for the family. The term living room actually comes from the term formal living room, or a room that most people do not use often and keep neat and tidy for guests.

Though the term has loosened a bit, and more people use their living room as they might use their family room, the distinction is still present. A living room is almost always more formal than a family room, we have all been to our grandparent’s house and have been told to stay out of the living room to keep it clean.

What Is a Family Room?

A family room is just that: a room where the family can unwind and relax after a hard day. A family room is more likely to be a space where things like children’s toys are kept, where that dingy old recliner your family holds on to is kept, and where people spend their day just being themselves.

The family room may also be referred to as the den and is a place where family members spend time together and rest and relax. A family room may not be a place where you might entertain guests, it is more than likely the area where things are going to be a bit messier, where things may not be as ordered or as tidy, and where people can really unwind.

Should You Add a Family Room to Your Home?

If you have a home where you have a formal living room, you may want to take the time to work on a living room remodeling project that makes it a bit less formal. Most homes do not have a formal living room and many opt for a multipurpose room that can be cleaned up if needed but that can still be comfortable for family.

If you are looking to take on a family room remodeling project, it is a great thing to do. A less formal family room makes it possible for you and your family to unwind after the day and to really have a great time and relax. A wonderful family room is a fantastic place to rest and for your family to come together and really love their home and relate to one another.

If you do not have a family room, this may be the time to add one to your home or to alter and remodel a room you already have for that purpose.
